Cernavoda (Turkish Bogazköy) is a town in Cernavoda county, Dobrogea region, Romania. It has a population of 19,890 inhabitants.
The city is a Danube harbour and it hosts the Nuclear Power Plant Cernavoda, the only CANDU-type plant in Romania.
The town was founded by Greek colonists and named Axiopolis in the 4th century BC, as a commercial point with the Dacians nearby. It is believed that the town was rebuilt by the legendary Negru Voda, ruler of Wallchia. That’s where its name could derive from, “cerna”(cernîi) meaning “black” in Slavic. Another version is that the name comes from Slavic meaning “black water”. This could be linked with the name of the nearby river, Carasu, which in Turkish has the same meaning as black water. Between 1980 and 1985, engineer Anghel Saligny built here a bridge over Danube and Borcea. The King Carol I bridge, (later renamed Anghel Saligny) had a total length of 4,087.95 meters, becoming the longest bridge complex in Europe at that time. Link: Cernavoda City Hall
